Combine
one individual's forty-six years of qualified cheffing experience, with
another's twelve years of professional cooking, and what does one get
?
Fifty eight combined years of culinary concoctions; an old chef and a
young chef-Ette!!
This culinary combination of over half a century, belongs to Albin and
Jenny Kilzer, co-owners of local Knysna cookery school, Kilzers Kitchen.
What better location for a cookery school - ideally
situated on top of a hill and looking down onto the Knysna Lagoon.This
establishment, motivated primarily as a venue for education of the production
of plated pleasures, hosts various cooking classes. These are especially
designed to teach, motivate and stimulate the correct preparation methods,
with the end result being simple, tasty and wholesome food. Says chef
Albin (the old one ), "Our motto and the secret of our success in
the kitchen, is simply - 'to keep it simple".
Classes are conducted in a custom designed kitchen -
walk into the room and there is no doubt in one's
mind, that this establishment is seriously geared for the sole purpose
of preparing food, glorious food..............
'We enjoy food, we relish the entire process of preparing a satisfying
meal, and love conveying this joy to others through our cookery classes".
Albin and Jenny aim to achieve a balance between education and enjoyment
value, whereby the student leaves the course (albeit grudgingly),with
the overall impression of having learned much, in a relaxed and fun-filled
environment.
On offer to those tempted to try the tasty tutelage of Albin and Jenny
are various courses:
Foundations of Good Cooking - a course
covering the essentials of various preparation methods, knife skills,
de-boning meat, chicken, fish; preparation of various stocks and sauces
etc. The course then progresses to applied skills - students prepare various
dishes using the basic preparation methods which they have by now, mastered.
Pudding and Pastry Course - puddings, pastries,
ice creams – anything sweet and frighteningly fattening - not for
the fainthearted.
Advanced Course - advanced students are taught to stock take the fridge
and pantry at a glance, to learn to successfully improvise a menu and
meal relying on the raw ingredients available. This challenging and interesting
course is aimed at students who have already mastered basic skills as
taught at the school of cooking.

On a weekly basis we enjoy our Wednesday "YOU LOOK WE COOK" evenings, whereby Albin and Jenny prepare a 3 course dinner in front of the diners. Guests arrive at 7.00 pm to be greeted with a famous tot of" Jenny's Gin" - a combination of strawberries, gin and fresh lavender ,as well as mouthwatering appetizers. At 7.30 there is a general round-up of all the visitors, who are then entertained with a floor show by the husband and wife team - amidst general mayhem and plenty of laughter.Once guests have been given a run-down of what their dinner is all about - they are then shown to tables laid up according to individual reservations- where they are pampered and served the pre-demonstrated meal.
All guests staying at Guadeloupe are most welcome to join us by arrangement for dinner at the Cook and Look every Wednesday evening, as well as the general public. This is yet another QUALITY EXPERIENCE on offer at Kilzers Kitchen - an evening not to be missed!!
Kilzers Kitchen is also an ideal venue for a small conference - we have the
infrastructure to accommodate and cater for a small conference of not more than 40 delegates - we have the facilities to serve morning and afternoon teas, as well as a tasty luncheon prepared in the specially designed kitchen as well.
